The wonder of Whitney Houston
Halfway around the orb, American fighter jets were in the air above the deserts of Kuwait. Back home in Tampa, 70,000 fans at Wonderful Bowl XXV in 1991 were waving American flags and holding homemade banners in attest to of the troops overseas.
Onto a stage at the center of the football field stepped Whitney Houston. If she was on edge or unsure about what she was about to do, she displayed no jitters whatsoever. With the nation watching, and with struggle troops tuning in, she delivered a rendition of “The Star-Spangled Flag” that radiated confidence in her country.
She came to Tampa Circus a representative of the entertainment industry — the wholesome face of the melodic establishment. She left the embodiment of patriotism during wartime. No matter the test, the flag would still be there. Our biggest and most powerful voice was guaranteeing it.
Chances are, Houston had never before seen a group like the one at the Super Bowl that year. Most of her fans hadn’t either.
