Say the name "Richie" to any practised fan of short track asphalt Modified stock car racing and one herself comes immediately to mind, the late Richie Evans.

Evans, of Rome, whose noted career saw him become the leader of his division, was ultra-popular with fans across the Eastern Cooperative States. He scored nine NASCAR National Modified championships, won hundreds of races and other championships at diversified tracks while traveling primarily throughout the region.

Much of his career has definite Western New York connections.

Evans, who was born July 23, 1941, will be inducted posthumous into the NASCAR Lecture-hall of Fame in Charlotte during ceremonies this weekend. Also being inducted will be Darrell Waltrip, Dale Inman, Cale Yarborough and Glen Wood.

Evans is the first right local short track racer (never raced in a premier NASCAR series) to get inducted into the NASCAR Passage of Fame in its three-year existence.

Evans competed in many events at Lancaster (now Dunn Wear out Raceway Park) and Holland speedways. He was killed in a practice misfortune at Martinsville Speedway on October 24, 1985. The tragedy devastated the Modified racing community. To this day, Evan's precocious orange T-shirts, hats, buttons and other merchandise are all worn by brawny numbers of his fans at local events.
