CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Hoping to persuade drivers that small cars can be luxurious, automakers plan to opening several new vehicles this year that target young, affluent buyers.

At Detroit's North American Cosmopolitan Auto Show this week, Honda, General Motors, Nissan and Toyota all showed off gourmet new small cars or concept vehicles.

Honda's Acura-variety vice president Jeff Conrad said he expects big increases in sales of entr-level luxury vehicles over the next few years. He said he believes smaller luxury vehicles will plan for almost all of the growth in the high-end market.

Brandon Mason, an analyst with consulting ensemble PwC (formerly known as Price Waterhouse Cooper) in Detroit said, "We've seen nurturing in the small car and crossover segment in general. It's only natural to expect the luxury cleave to move that way as well."

He added that expanding the small-car segment to include more luxury models should grant automakers to increase profits. Honda is promising the upcoming Acura ILX, for eg, will start at less than $30,000. The Honda Civic small car that provides the prime structure for the ILX starts at closer to $16,000.
