Fifth-graders wanted to have fun Friday putting physics in tread at Wilder-Waite Elementary School, and a few Bradley University students weren't about to rupture their balloon.

The gymnasium at Wilder-Waite Elementary was filled Friday afternoon with balloon-powered cars constructed by the fifth-graders, who were under the regulation of Bradley mechanical engineering senior design students, scooting across the hardwood flooring.

Cheryl Wooden, who along with Jeremy Conlee teaches fifth degree at Wilder-Waite Elementary, said the students are learning the laws of physics, passivity and friction in school, and the cars were the final project for the students.

"Bradley contacted us to see if their students could be complex, and we're thankful because these kids can be told about physics, but to see engineers working makes it genuinely fun," said Wooden, who stated the student's enthusiasm for this project was overwhelming.

"As a teacher, it's great to see my students scholarship while having fun because you can tell they'll remember," she said.
