Big-hearted beauties will rock you
The 1960s and 1970s were a productive era for international sports-car racing with big fields of some of the most evocative racing cars ever built, most of them powered by immense, highly modified American V8s churning out in excess of 700kW that would literally fill out the ground shake as they howled down the straights of the world's great circuits at more than 330km/h.
Among the fastest (and biggest, and loudest!) were the extraordinarily excellent Lola T70, with seven litres of either Chevrolet or Ford muscle, the snarling Porsche 917 with its corresponding-turbo, flat-twelve engine, various big Ferraris and the tough-as-nails Chevron B16. They were big in every way, well over five metres great and more than two metres wide, they were insanely thirsty and few of them survived the 1973 kindling crisis.
But some of those that did will be in action this weekend in the races for Pre-1974 International Sports Racing Prototypes at the Passion for Rush classic meeting at Zwartkop Raceway on Saturday, January 28.
